Nothing is more annoying than itchy red dry skin. Some of you may be lucky enough to only have it seasonally, while other may have to deal with it all year round. The dryness might affect only a portion of your body, or it may span from head to toe. Of course genetics always seems to play a big role in the behaviors of our body, so that may be a simple answer to a sometimes complex question. Other times it may be the weather or climate that you live in, or medications that you might be taking. Either way, the cause of your exteremly dry skin (and your need for body lotion) often isn’t something that you can easily change. You can definitely take steps, like investing in a humidifier, to help ease your symptoms, but you probably will need some other moisturizing product to help you deal with dryness.

What To Look For in a Lotion

So your looking for the best lotion for sensitive dry and itchy skin? Well that might mean different things to different people, but there are some qualities of a good body lotion that you’ll want to keep an eye out for. A good sign of a quality skin care product is the “Dermatologist Recommended”  label. It’s not hard for manufacturing companies to create a product that is oily and that you can rub on your skin, but it does take a lot of work and effort to get that product just right.

We recommend that you stick with well known brands like Eucerin for  example. There’s no question that it’s possible that there is some newer company out there that has a new amazing product, but your always safer sticking with the well established products that people have already tested for you and can vouch for.

Another big thing to pay attention to is the included ingredients. You’ll want to look for things like aloe, vitamin E, and  jojoba oil in the whichever lotion you choose.

Applying Body Lotion

While applying lotion to your dry skin may not be rocket science, there are definitely some general rules that you should follow in order to get the best results.

Use Only After Washing

You probably have noticed that there is no time when your skin feels more dry and itchy then immediately after getting out of the shower and drying off. This is because the water and soaps that you have just used have stripped away your bodies natural oil which moisturizes it. This is the most ideal time to apply lotion. Not only is your skin in dire need of additional moisturizer, but your skin is also cleanest at this point and you don’t have to worry about rubbing dirt and dry skin into your pours.

Spread Evenly

Don’t apply lotion direct to anywhere on your body except for you hands. First apply the lotion to your hands and distribute over both hands evenly. Then apply it the necessary areas. Make sure to rub it evenly over the area, and continue rubbing it in until it is all absorbed and your skin no longer feels oily. If you don’t do this, some of your products oils may rub off onto clothes or furniture.

 Don’t Apply Too Much!

First start out by only using a small amount in your hands before putting on the dry areas. If you need more you can always get a little more in a minute. Don’t get us wrong, use as much lotion as you need , but apply it in smaller amounts. If you’ve been massaging it in for more than 10 minutes and your skin feels slippery, you’ve probably used too much.
