“We are what we eat.” That phrase is used all the time, and the fact is, it’s true. The food we consume actually does contribute to how we look, feel, and act. Our skin and hair are good indicators of what we have been eating over the long run. The occasional grease or fatty food is not going to show. However, if a poor diet is our norm it will be noticeable right there on our faces.
Our skin can become dry relatively fast, if we do not keep ourselves hydrated. Among other places a lack of hydration will start to show it’s signs on our skin. Drinking plenty of water helps keep us hydrated. Whereas drinking too much soda, coffee or other beverages which are known to be high in sugar or caffeine will actually work against the rehydrating process. Eating foods that have a high level of antioxidants can have a positive impact on our skin. Some foods that are high in antioxidants are tomatoes, peaches and cantaloupe. Adding these foods to your weekly diet should help to promote healthy looking facial skin.
Foods that are high in omega fatty acids are also good for our skin. Some foods that are high in omega acids are certain fish, nuts and seeds. Eating these types of foods will help to increase the strength of the cells in our bodies. When the body’s cells are stronger they can hold more water in, holding more water in helps our skin look better.
Eating foods that are high in beta carotene is also beneficial to our skin. Beta carotene can be found in carrots, peas, and broccoli just to name a few. Cooking or steaming these items will help the body get more of the beta carotene from them than what can be gotten form consuming them raw. Spinach is also a top contributor in skin care. Spinach has many things in it that can help the body with DNA repair that helps to repair skin cells that have been damaged by the outside elements, such as too much exposure to the sun.
Foods that are high in salt are another group to limit the consumption of. Consuming too many salty food products can make our skin tissues swell up and become puffy. This puffiness will be obvious because, it will be right there on our face. Having healthy skin is not just about eating properly one time a week; it is about having a healthy diet every day. If we want our skin to look good and to be healthy we have to take care of it just like we would anything else that we want to have last.
